Open Letter to Charlotte…or
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte,
There May Be Some Real
Facts to Learn About
Dua Khalil Aswad
and the Rest of the World…
By Beverly Hicks Burch
Fair readers, recently someone stopped by and read a recent blog on the “honor killing” of Dua Khalil Aswad and left a comment, some rants and made some accusations. She seemed to miss the whole context of the post. It made me think…about my previous post…and about the things she said in her comment. I suppose that’s the purpose of “exchange”. I apologize in advance for the length of my answer, but sweet Charlotte raised several issues that required research on my part. Anyway, here’s my response, in an open letter form…
Yes, what was done to Dua Khalil Aswad was sickening, brutal and horrific. It was a tragic waste of life. When I saw the video I became sick to my stomach. A 17 year old girl was not a match for a mob of 100 angry, murderous men intent on snuffing out her precious life in the name of “honor”.
Now, let me see if I can decipher you ramblings enough to give you a coherent and polite answer. Your comment and words gave me pause to think and reason to research.
First, Charlotte, let me say, I don’t follow a “party” line. I have a brain and do my own thinking. I have most of my life, sometimes much to the chagrin of my daddy and other people in my life, but, unlike Dua, I live in a free country and have that right. To be honest and fair, my daddy raised me to have a brain and gave me the impetus to be an independent thinker.
As far as “dragging Rosie into it”…that’s a really, a poor choice of words, don’t you think? I think if you had read the post in context you would have seen the point I was trying to make. (By the way, I had written my previous blog before Rosie left The View. It had nothing to do with that soap opera or the fact that she left The View. Personally, who cares? I have better things to do with my time than watch that daily “henfest”. In pains me to see a show like that held up as intellectual fodder for women. The View is more akin to cock fighting, dog fighting or greyhound racing. Talk about “dumbing down”.)
You read one word…”Rosie”…and saw red and seemed to miss the overall context of the whole post, including what I said concerning Betty Mahmoody and her daughter Mahtob’s nightmare experience in 1984. Their saga started out as a two week family visit in Tehran, Iran and turned into 18 months of abuse at the hands of Betty’s Iranian husband. The story was chronicled in the book and movie, Not Without My Daughter.
You are correct in one aspect. The practice of stoning as a capital punishment was part of the culture of pagans, ancient (not present day) Jewish society and Islamic society. As we have seen with Dua’s “honor killing” stoning is still practiced among certain Islamic cultures today. It was not an accepted, sanctioned means of punishment of Christianity. Just the opposite. In fact, many early Christians were stoned to death as part of the persecution and judgment for practicing their faith.
Before his conversion, the Apostle Paul was a devout Jew, a Roman citizen, a zealous persecutor of the new Church and early Christians, and he was known by the name Saul of Tarsus. As Saul, he stood by and watch as Stephen a much beloved Christian deacon of the early Church was stoned to death. While on the way to Damascus to see Jewish leaders to make arrangements for more Christians to be stoned, Saul had a supernatural experience that lead to his conversion and the Apostle Paul was born.
There is no reference in the New Testament mandating stoning, nor did Christ every mandate stoning as an accepted practice. There was a reference in the New Testament in which a woman was dragged by a group of Jewish men before Christ for stoning. Christ stooped down and wrote something in the dirt with his finger, stood, looked at the men and said, “Those who have not sinned, cast the first stone.” The men all turned and walked away. He then looked at the woman and said, “Woman, go and sin no more.”
If there were any “Christian” groups that practiced stoning, I’ve never heard of them, and they were some renegade offshoot sect. And, I can guarantee there is not a New Testament scripture that condones stoning. Can you, Charlotte, reference (that means give me) a New Testament scripture that says, “Thou shall stone.”? While the Old Testament does allow for stoning under Mosaic (Jewish) law, after the birth of Christ, there was a new dispensation that Christendom followed…it was the Age of Grace. What a beautiful name. See below…
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
— John 8:1-11
It should be noted here that the people Christ was dealing with in the above Scripture were Jews. That is not to cast a disparaging light on Jewish brethren, but, to point out that the practice of stoning was a Jewish practice under Old Testament, Mosaic Law. The temple was a Jewish place of worship, the Law of Moses was Jewish Law, the Pharisees were part of the ruling body of the Jewish faith and the temple courts were the governing body of the Jewish people. Clearly, from Christ’s actions we could assume He did not condone stoning. This Scripture is Forgiveness and Grace in action.
One of the points in my previous blog was that the ilk of Rosie, Lindsey, Nicole, Paris and others who take their rights and freedoms for granted and to an extent abuse them and/or mishandle them would have a hard time living in a truly oppressive society like the one Dua had to live and exist in. These pampered, privileged, spoiled dilettantes and starlets…some with little or no talent other than exposing their private parts for public view believe most of their own press. Could they, I ask, last in a society where they were made to wear burqa and veils? Paris can’t even keep panties on. Paris drove drunk, then drove on suspended license. She was sentenced to 45 days in jail, had her sentence cut in half and then served three days before being “reassigned” to home with an ankle bracelet for 40 days. She doesn’t even have the moral backbone to last in a swank LA jail for 20 days! In Saudi Arabia it is considered sinful under Islamic law for women to even drive! Poor Dua and other women like her…bratty, spoiled Paris! How disgusting!
Instead of being concern about “fly-by-night” conspiracy theories, why doesn’t Rosie get involved where it might do some real good? Why doesn’t she go to Islamic countries and crusade, rally groups there and speak up for the rights for women, minorities and gays in Islamic countries?! Maybe because she knows she doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance on a hot day in July there…and that is cowardice. It’s easy to do it where you can be bombastic and force it and bully it down other people’s throats. That was Saddam’s, Stalin’s and Hitler’s tactic, by the way.
It’s also paranoid to buy into lame conspiracies that don’t even float or even make good science. And, that hurts your credibility, no matter how sincere you might be. It also shows how firmly you believe in your belief system when you’re willing to stand up for it when and where it might be dangerous…that’s what happened to the early Christians, to the Jews in Germany. Evidently it is happening to the homosexuals, women and minorities in Islamic countries today and Rosie is ignoring that. Let’s see Rosie go over there and preach her brand of “gospel”. What does she stand to loose? Huh? Women are chattel and children are property in these countries. She claims to be an advocate for both.
Like Rosie, Charlotte, you ignored the fact that since 1979 in Iran alone over 4,000 homosexual have been killed for the “crime” of homosexuality. Once again, I would ask, why does Rosie, or you for that matter, not speak out about this travesty reminiscent of the slaughter Nazi Germany perpetuated on millions of innocent Jews. Do you and Rosie believe the Holocaust was a conspiracy, too? Well, guess what? Just within the last several days, workers laying gas lines in the Ukraine uncovered a mass grave containing the bodies of at least 5,000 Jews murders by Nazis during the days of War World II .
Steel doesn’t “burn”?! Give me a break! I grew up in a steel town. If steel doesn’t burn, why are there blast furnaces at steel mills? Why is the steel liquid and molten hot before it cools and solidified? I’ve passed by the steel mills when that stuff was pouring out of the buckets and it looked like lava…so give me a break. I’ve seen flames flicker on it. Everything, my dear Charlotte, has a burning point or destruction point under certain conditions. By the way, they don’t use bombs in steel mills to create steel…
My father is a mechanical engineer. He also could tell you about the plausibility of the “steel doesn’t burn” garbage and this “control demolition” theory. He does like good jokes. He can tell you what could cause buildings like the Twin Towers to crumble after an impact by huge airliners and internal burning. He likes to talk about thermodynamics, physics and a lot of other things a wordsmith like me finds, well daunting.
On September 11, 2001 I set in front of my TV and I watched as the drama of that day unfolded. It took longer than ten minutes for that morning to march forward and the Twin Towers to fall after they were hit by planes and burned and smoldered. If you will go back and review news footage and tapes of that day, you will see airplanes fly into the buildings point blank, smash windows, and leave airplane shaped silhouettes on the side of each Towers. Then, the debris from inside the Towers started fluttering in the air.
After the first Tower was hit, there was a flash, smoke and fire and the Tower started the almost hour long process of weakening before sliding into oblivion. It burned because there were combustible items on all stories and the airplane delivered enormous impact and jet fuel. To use a crass show biz term…it was all “caught on tape”. Funny how we’ll believe any stupid pet trick or anything else caught on tape, but a moment of history…naaahhh…it’s a conspiracy and was set up by the “Man”…or the Government…Oh, by the way, what about the survivors that made it out of the buildings before they crumbled? They recounted smelling jet fuel.
When the second tower finally fell it had taken well over an hour for everything to happen…beginning to end. Once again, it’s documented on news footage and on tape a bazillion times in a bazillion ways…that’s a whole lot longer than ten minutes. And just for the record, there is news footage…caught on tape of the planes flying into the buildings…no government bombs…good grief! People must have the memories of gnats. Charlotte, if you heard a car backfire, it would “sound like an “explosion”. In your world would that mean the car had a bomb in it or that its tailpipe was rigged with C4? …jeez
http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/nyregion/20020526_WTC/index_CHRONO.html – The New York Times called it 102 minutes
As far as ruins or debris that were “scooped up and sent to China”…was that done with a spoon, shovel or bulldozer? I mean come on…that’s how silly that sounds. What country would allow that to happen and why? I certainly don’t see an aggressive country like China allowing themselves to become a garbage dump and take one for the good ol’ USA or for Mom, baseball and apple pie.
Did anyone ever stopped to ask if this was a demolition effort, i.e. proper way to get rid of the debris from that day? Repeat after me…it’s called salvage. From what I’ve read, it’s being recycled…is that bad? There was a steel company in China that bought 50,000 tons of steel from Ground Zero. Were we…New Yorkers and Americans…suppose to allow the debris to lay there forever? How stupid! Survivors start over…they rebuild…they go on with their life…I know, I’m a two time lung cancer survivor.
Now, the business of “the entire military stood DOWN for hours while we were supposedly under attack!” My, we were a little testy there weren’t we? I take it you don’t know how the military works? Well, there’s this thing called chain of command. For lay people like you and me, that means there’s a pecking order…it goes up…it goes down. The troops are commanded by the officers.
Now, most of America was in turmoil that day. When the first plane hit the first Tower, most of us thought it an accident reminiscent of the plane hitting the Empire State Building in 1945. (It was a much smaller plane and a smaller building in those days.)
I’m sure you’re glad the military showed restraint and didn’t start mowing down citizens and all moving vehicles and aircraft immediately. By the time the second airplane hit, we knew something was very, very wrong. This is not a military state, so the military did not take over the country at that point in time. They are not the supreme rulers of the USA.
But, unbeknown to you and others like you, our military was in action. I know. My son was in the Air National Guard at the time. He was at the base the day 9/11 happened. His dad had abandoned the family four months earlier so it had been a rough summer for us. My son was activated full duty US Air Force that day, the base was locked down, and it was a couple of days before I even got see him. (I was totally alone and penniless at the time since his dad had walked and taken all of the family money. It was a scary, lonely time. My son’s dad didn’t even bother to call and see how he was. He was too busy with his new lover.)
My son was a boom operator…he refueled jets in the air. His wing was launched almost immediately and did refueling runs to refuel the military jets that were patrolling our air space protecting us. Military planes were the only planes in the air those first few days. My son’s crew flew the refueling run from Alabama to DC and he saw the Pentagon burning. I can guarantee you Charlotte, he was not “standing down” doing nothing. He and thousand others like him in our Armed Services were protecting the thankless thousand others like you and Rosie.
And, as far as two illegal elections, I beg to differ. Maybe you are just very uneducated, ill informed or attended schools that didn’t teach American history and maybe you just chose to ignore the facts of history. There are many elections in the history of the United States that were as close or closer than the election of 2000. For instance:
- 1916 – Woodrow Wilson (D) defeated Charles Hughes (R) by 591, 385 votes
- 1960 – John F. Kennedy (D) defeated Richard Nixon (R) by 118, 574 votes…wow! How many hanging chads there?!
- 1968 – Richard Nixon (R) defeated Hubert Humphrey (D) by 510, 314 votes
- 1976 – Jimmy Carter (D) defeated Gerald Ford (R) by 1, 682 790 votes
- 2000 – George Bush (R) defeated Al Gore (D) by 517, 179 votes. This is one of the elections you alluded to being “illegal”. I guess the other illegal election was the re-election of Bush…just because he was.
As the examples above relate (and check out the resource link), the 2000 election is not the only close election in this nation’s history. It appears the only difference was the demeanor of the men that were defeated…they exhibited statesmanship. They refused to put the country through a debacle. That’s a far cry from the defeated party…Al Gore…of the 2000 election who exhibited the maturity of a child and moral turpitude of an ambulance chaser.
There were two duly elected elections, whether I agreed with the outcome or not. The problem was a cry-baby loser who, for the first time in history, put the country through a fiasco over “hanging chads”…he was like the kid who gets mad and says…”it’s my ball, I’m taking it and going home”…only it wasn’t his ball…there was this little thing call an Electoral College. It’s funny…when the Electoral College elects someone like, say JKF, in an extremely close race…much closer than the 2000 election, it’s legal and everyone is just fine and dandy with that. So, Charlotte, let me get what your saying…when a Democrat is elected in a close election i.e. Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, and Jimmy Carter it’s legal; but, when a Republican is elected in a close election it’s illegal? Boy, talk about following the party line!! That’s the very dark pot calling the kettle black…
Leaving depleted uranium? Honestly!? I’m not quite sure what this vague rant was about…are you saying coalition troops are doing this? Are they taking this out of their pockets and leaving it like bread crumbs Hansel & Gretel style? Hush, hush sweet Charlotte, for I fear you’re confused. Can you honestly say you don’t know about the fears of the world that Iranian President “I’m-a-nut-job” is this close to developing nuclear weapons? Have you not seen the rockets Kim Jong-il launched just this week for testing as part of his nuclear readiness program, or where you wearing you aluminum foil hat that day to block “bad rays”? The Iranian and the Korean Presidents are the ones to fear in the nuclear department. They are the wild cards. Look at these countries and check out human rights there.
Not only that, but, Saddam, his sons and his regime were notorious torturers. He was as bad or worse than Hitler and Stalin. Millions of Iraqi and minorities in Iraqi were maimed, mutilated, raped, murdered and enslaved by Saddam. I will never forget seeing the news footage the Kurdish village of Halabja after Saddam dispersed mustard gas into the village in 1988. He murdered 80,000 people that day in the village, including children. Those babies breathed in mustard gas…a blistering agent! The gas was first banned by Geneva Convention Protocol as early as 1925 and then again in 1993, but Saddam was still using it, flying in the convention of humanity. By the way, I would call that a “weapon of mass destruction”. Maybe you think mustard gas is a more appropriate agent for children to breathe than the “depleted uranium” you allege is being left behind by coalition forces, but, I think decent people all over the world should be concerned that an animal like Saddam walked the Earth and was allowed to do what he did. The world stopped Hitler…why shouldn’t the world have stopped Saddam?
Well, Charlotte, that’s my two cents worth for what it’s worth. I’m sure to a seemingly conspiracy theorist like you, the facts won’t matter much…but there they are nonetheless. I would like to thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. By the way, say hello to Elvis in Atlantis for me…
