A Trip to Carlsbad Caverns Begins, by Beverly Hicks Burch

Carlsbad Caverns B 2001

In Jan. 2001 I had the opportunity to visit Carlsbad Caverns in Carlsbad, NM. As a piece of Bev and Tall & Handsome trivia, Carlsbad Caverns is actually a place in T & H’s native New Mexico that I have visited and he has never seen.

Reportedly Carlsbad Caverns is the third largest underground chamber in North America and the seventh largest in the world. The Caverns has several “rooms” you can tour. The main one I toured was called the Big Room. The route around it is one and a quarter mile and I’m proud to say I navigated the whole thing…with the help of a walking cane. There are several famous limestone formations in the cavern including the one above and one named “Rock of Ages”. You can check out more at the website for the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
