Never Worked a Day in Her Life?! by Beverly Hicks Burch

Never Worked a Day in Her Life?!

This week Hilary Rosen started a firestorm when she accused Ann Romney of “never working a day in her life”.

My first thought was, “Seriously?! Are you really dragging out that old insult? You must feel really threatened!” In life I’ve found the go to tactic is insult the opponent when you feel threatened.

It’s mudslinging time people and the Obama campaign is shoveling it…

Of course Obama’s “advisors” are coming out voicing their “disappointment” in Ms Rosen’s comments. Yep, real loyalty there…

The jaw dropping disingenuous move here is that suddenly the Obama campaign is snatching back from the “war on women” tactic. Why do I say disingenuous?

Well, just this week I was emailed (I can’t for the life of me understand how I got on this email list) an email from the re-elect Obama campaign. The re-elect Obama campaign must feel the inevitable candidate for the GOP is Mitt Romney because the letter contained five (5) scare tactics ominous, treacherous things that will happen if Romney is elected in November.

Number one on the list? (1) Mitt Romney will declare a war on women.

Yep, as simple as that, that’s what Obama’s number one concern about Mitt Romney is and the big evil they are warning and agitating the American people with…and now comes Hilary Rosen…

Give me a freaking break!!

I feel qualified to speak on this subject from several levels.

First and foremost, I am a woman…a bona fide girly girl…a college educated girly girl…so take that… Furthermore, I have worked outside of the home and I have been a stay-at-home mom, been a stay-at-home mom who worked part time, a stay-at-home mom who help in home based businesses and been a stay-at-home mom who homeschooled. Honey, if it’s on the spectrum, I’ve probably been there.

And, let me tell you something, sister…being a stay at home mom is the hardest work I’ve ever done in my life. You scrub, clean, shop, cook, nurse to good health, budget, chauffer, recycle, garden, organize, structure and in many cases educate formally (if you homeschool as I did) or informally just in everyday life, teaching you children about life, love and morals…and those are just a few of the chores you do. Many times you do this on a budget stretched so thin it’s bare in places, but, it’s all about sacrifice for the greater good…in this case for your children and or family. (Sacrifice is a concept that seems to get little understanding in our society today. O Henry’s The Gift of the Magi would seem like a lame and stupid story to many, yet it epitomizes the gift of true, caring heartfelt, sacrificial love.) Most of the time a stay-at-home mom’s work is done without the aid of help…unless she has the help of a caring and loving mate. In that case, then she’s in a loving partnership which works much like a business would work at its best…like a well oiled machine.

Many moms who work outside of the home have the assistance of nannies, and cleaning help. Some have the luxury of personal shoppers, decorators and personal assistance. Notice, I didn’t use a universal statement like the ilk of Ms Rosen are want to do…I didn’t say all working moms have the above luxuries because I know many are living from paycheck to paycheck, especially if they are single working moms. I also do realize there are some stay-at-home moms who may avail themselves to the same luxuries and well they should if they can afford them because they do work hard.

A couple of years ago my sister and her husband adopted their first child. They are well into the middle years of their life. My sister has been an educator all of her adult life. She holds a Master’s Degree and education beyond that. I saw her work hard in her profession. But, since having her child and being a stay-at-home mom I have seen my sister truly tired. It is a blessed, fulfilled tired…with a heart full of love beyond reason. She does it well and she deserves it. She deserves the choice to stay-at-home. It does not make her brain numb, uneducated or clueless to the outside world and the concerns thereof as Ms Rosen would seem to think.

If anything a stay-at-home mom is avidly in tune to the world around her and the issues that affect her and her family. And, for Ms Rosen’s future reference, the economy and jobs are part of those concerns…or as the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign put it, “it’s the economy, stupid!”

I was raised in a conservative household. My parents raised three girls, one who was physically and mentally challenged from a young age. We grew up in the `60s and `70s and we never had to be liberated from anything when it came to expectations.

Our Daddy considered it a top priority we receive an education, respect ourselves and expect others to respect us. Daddy’s mantra was “Get a good education in case you marry some dope who leaves you. You won’t have to sling hash in a greasy spoon if you get an education!” (Yep, I was the one who married said dope who left years later…which is an entirely different story…but, acquiring computer skills helped me snag a job I would have never imagined. Knowledge is power people!) In Daddy’s eyes we could do anything we wanted…there was just some things he couldn’t understand why we would want to do them…I mean why be a ditch digger when you could be a writer, a teacher, a doctor or whatever?!

Let’s look at Ms Rosen’s target for a moment: Ann Romney. Ms Romney is a mother of five sons. Just that makes me tired thinking about it! Ms Romney is no “air head blond or bimbo”. Not only did she attend BYU, but she finished her undergraduate work at Harvard University. Ever heard of that little ol’ school? I’m sure somewhere along the line, if Ms Romney’s college education was like mine, she had to take an economy class or two. Ms Romney has also been involved in charity work with many organizations. Yes, that is work. Someone has to do it or it won’t get done! Also, take into consideration that Ann Romney has accomplished all of this while battling multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

Let me tell you something: that in itself is no easy task. I can relate to that as someone with chronic and disabling illnesses and as a two time non-smoking lung cancer survivor. Sometimes just dealing with chronic illness is a full time job.

But, what it boils down to is this: Ann Romney is no hot house violet…

What Ms Rosen leaves out when she makes her disparaging remarks is this…choice! Kind of ironic coming from the party of choice, huh? Choice is okay if you are a Democrat and/or a liberal woman, but woe be unto you if you are in the GOP or consider yourself conservative or step out of line with the Democrat party line. Then your choices are invalid if they do not fall in line with the Democrat party and liberal women.

How totally hypocritical…

A Gassy, Bloated and Unfortunately Not An Anomaly, by Beverly Hicks Burch

In many places in this big ol’ US of A of ours people are now paying about $5.00 a gallon for gas…and then we’re being shamed for “needing” that commodity to run our lives.

We should after all, in a perfect world, ride horses every where we go or at least go the way of the Amish and use horse and buggy.

OR if you’re very fortunate and make lame movies like the remake of Charlie’s Angles and 50 First Dates then you can afford a $50,000 hybrid electric vehicle. That would make you one of the most evolved of our society and deserving to be worshiped…and own a car.

Here’s what I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around. Back in 2006 when gas prices were rising to an teeth-rattling three bucks, Democrats and the media couldn’t lay enough blame at the Bush Administration’s feet. (Yet another example.)

So, now that we are paying five bucks and waiting with baited breath for that $6 mark just in time for summer vacation time (anyone have money for vacation this year?) why is the current administration not getting fair and equal treatment. Especially since the current President has reduced domestic oil drilling by 13% and is on the campaign trail scaring people about the horrors of that old evil coal. *gasp*

Even though he knows how bad people are hurting…he’s just not going to change his mind…

..and how did Einstein define insanity? Oh, yeah, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results…

Pocket Change and Taxes, by Beverly Hick Burch

I know I have a lot less pocket change these days. One big reason is the cost of gasoline. Here’s a staggering statistic for you…gasoline was $1.83 on Jan. 20, 2009. That’s an 87% increase in a little over two years. Now, gas is quickly approaching $4 a gallon. And, why on earth in Jan. 20, 2009 such a benchmark? Come on mind think! Oh yeeaahh…that was the day our current President was inaugurated…DUH!

Highlights of Obama’s deficit reduction proposals…what idiot came up with these?!

Highlights of deficit reduction proposals –

Please read this article! If you care about your financial future and this country READ THIS. Then contact you Senators and Representatives and tell them this isn’t acceptable. Remind them what happened last week during the last election…and that the house cleaning can keep on keeping on…

This man is totally out of his league. He has sent this country on a downward spiral in two short years and these proposals will pretty much put us where the Bolsheviks put Mother Russia…in the toilet.

Here are just a few of the proposals:

  • Reduce the cost of living raise for Social Security (how secure is that?!)
  • Raise the age of retirement eventually to the age of 69. The French just rioted in the streets when their government tried to raise their retirement age to 60!!
  • Raise the threshold of how much of your income can be taxed for Social Security
  • Eliminate the child tax credit
  • Eliminate the mortgage interest deduction
  • Put a 15 cent tax on gasoline
  • Eliminate the tax free status of employer provided health care…in other words you’ll pay a tax on the health insurance you buy at work

And starting Jan. 1, 2011 the inheritance tax or death tax increases to 55%. That means if, for the sake of round numbers you have a 1 million dollar estate and hope to leave your family with no money worries…forget about that!!! All those years you worked to take care of your family were for nothing. The government will get 55%. So, out of 1 million dollars the government would get $55o,000 and the family would get $450,000.

How fair is that? This is one of the worst presidents in our history and he needs to be taken to the proverbial woodshed via elections…

Does This Sound and Feel Familiar…? by Beverly Hicks Burch

Does this sound and feel familiar…?

For the first time in the history of our country the majority of our people believe that the next five years will be worse than the past five years.

  • Jimmy Carter "Energy and the National Goals — A Crisis of Confidence," 1979

Why is it an ineffectual Democratic President seems to be “presiding” over  and asking these questions about mid-term of their Presidency while our once great country is sliding into a pit of unemployment, debt, despondency, despair and depression?

I don’t feel particularly hopeful about my next five years…how bout you?

For Your Tomorrows We Gave Our Todays, by Beverly Hicks Burch

For Your Tomorrows We Gave Our Todays

By Beverly Hicks Burch

As a young mother I remember reading the heartbreaking story of little Adam Walsh. Adam was 6 years old and had gone to the mall with his Mom. They were in a Sears store and Adam was in the toy department just a few aisles away from his mother when he was snatched away from her and vanished forever. Later little Adam’s severed head was found in a nearby canal and it was obvious he had become a victim of an evil predator.

When I read Adam’s story, an ice cold horror and fear surrounded my heart. At the time I was a young mother myself. My baby boy was only about 18 months old. All I could do at the time was rush to his side, pick him up, hold him and silently cry. I remember thinking “there but for the grace of God go I”. I also remember thinking at the time that one of the most horrific experiences for a parent to go through would be to have something happen to their child and not be there with the child to hold and comfort him or her.

It was a thought I could hardly bare to think about even as my son grew into a teen and later into an adult. It was even more heavily on my heart when he served his country in the Middle East after 9/11. All I could do was place his life in God’s hands…

But folks, I want to remind you this Memorial Day there have been many parents for generations who have gone through that very same dreaded experience. Somewhere on some raging battlefield in a foreign land, or even in this country during the Civil War, parents have lost precious children. They died alone, without the comfort and without the loving arms of their family cradling them as they passed from this life to the next. They died while serving this country and for the values we believe in. You only have to think of Pearl Harbor, Hitler, Stalin, Saddam, Idi Amin, the warlords of Somalia, concentration camps, the slavery still practiced in Africa and the gulags of the Cold War to even begin to scrape the evil that lurks in the corners of this world and where some of our sons and daughter fought or aided the innocent.

Hitler was an evil that was unleashed upon Germany and the world a generation ago. He promised change for Germans who were still reeling from WWI and felt they had gotten the short end of the stick from the armistice after that war. As Hitler rose to power if you ridiculed him or questioned him you were bullied and made to shut up…sometimes permanently. Soon Germans found their freedom of speech very limited…unless it was in favor of the Fuhrer…and soon whole segments of groups and populations were being loaded up in cattle cars and “relocated” to death camps…all for the greater good of German society. There were a few brave souls that did act toward the end of the war for the true greater good of Germany.

In July 1944 there was a failed plot to overthrow Hitler. It was the plot the movie Valkyrie starring Tom Cruise as Claus Phillipp von Stauffenberg was based on. These men knew that Hitler was causing the demise of Germany and for Germany to survive, Hitler had to be stopped. They were willing to give their “todays” for Germany’s tomorrows… Although the plot ultimately failed, it had to have helped with the eventual downfall of the Third Reich and today the men of the July 20th, 1944 plot are honored in Germany as heroes…they are remembered…they are memorized…they are not forgotten…

My Tall & Handsome’s own Uncle Emzy (Gaydon) fought in that same war. Uncle Emzy was a John Wayne and Ronald Reagan type of guy. He was captured for posterity in a famous picture taken of Gen. Eisenhower. There is a group of GIs standing around Eisenhower and there as big as Dallas is Uncle Emzy. Emzy is the tall guy to the right of Eisenhower in the center of the picture. He’s the one with the healthy head of hair.

Emzy was a member of the 101st Airborne and he fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in that battle and the wound was so severe they thought he would die on that foreign battlefield. A chaplain was even sent to give Emzy last rites and a good stiff dose of morphine. Emzy was of good strong western stock and he survived that wound, but he carried a scar of that hole with him on his shoulder the rest of his life. Emzy had been willing to give his todays for our tomorrows…

Today I saw a special about the battle of Iwo Jima and it really touched my heart. My own mother’s Uncle Billy had taken part as a pilot of the amphibious landings there. Some of the most ferocious fighting of WWII took place in the Pacific Theater and Iwo Jima specifically. After the heaviest of fighting was over and some of the battle weary warriors were preparing to leave they discovered thousands of crosses marking the fallen dead. There was also a sign that declared:

“When you go home tell them for us and say, For your tomorrows we gave our todays.”

I don’t know how many of you have ever been to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a somber and sobering experience, especially if you stay long enough for the changing of the guard. In that tomb lays the body of someone’s child who died alone on a distant battlefield. They were scared and without the love and comfort of family…their family never even had the comfort of giving that loved child a proper burial. That Unknown Soldier gave his todays for our tomorrows…

There are many things wrong, out of whack and topsy turvy in our country right now. Not the least of which is the fact that a mosque can be built within a breath’s distance from Ground Zero in New York City. There were almost 3,000 souls vaporized into eternity on 9/11 by people representing the religion of the mosques of this world. That is a lot of innocent people who lost their “tomorrows”…

Out of humanity and respect they could find a more appropriate place….there are already thousands of mosques in the US. Why at Ground Zero? I would suggest they could build their mosque there when Christians and Jews are allowed to build churches and synagogues in Mecca, Medina and any other Islamic cities and allowed to worship freely. And, just when do you think this would happen? It would be a really, really freezing cold day in July I’m afraid…and ice skating in Hades…

But, there is one thing that is just wrong in this country that could be made right with a simple gesture of respect.

“Mr. President, don’t you think you could stop by on your way to your party with Paul McCartney to lay a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier? After all, you’re partying with Paul because that soldier gave his tomorrows for your todays…

What’s Up with This? by Beverly Hicks Burch

What’s Up with This?

By Beverly Hicks Burch

Let me ask you something. Have you flown the “friendly” skies lately? Well, just in case you haven’t let me fill you in on the “pleasure of flying in the Brave New World…

First, you need to arrive at the airport hours ahead of your scheduled departure. Why? Simple. You have a whole lot of “security” measures you have to go through. You have to make sure you have plenty of ID…driver’s license, passport, anything with a photo, name, address, you know the drill.

Be prepared to pay dearly to check bags…the price range is your first born for the first bag and a child or pet for each bag thereafter. You are allowed to carry a wonderful 50 pounds per bag. For the average person that’s a few pair of underwear, shoes and jeans…you buy the rest where ever you’re going because it’s cheaper than paying the excess weight charge airlines charge at gunpoint check-in.

Then you have to go through the security check where they go through your bags. Nowadays you can no longer carry anything liquid or gel larger than 4 ounces on your person. If you do have something like that on you, it has to be in clear quart size baggies…no gallon size…quart size. If you use the wrong size it goes in the garbage. If you happen to be high maintenance and use several lovely products to maintain your beauty, well you can use as many quart size baggies to squeeze those products into as you like. It’s also a perverse pleasure to pull those out, let me tell you 😉

If you happen to have an autoimmune disorder (called Sjogren’s Syndrome) like I do that is killing your moisture producing glands and you happen to bring a bottle of water from home to stay hydrated, well be prepared to toss that puppy in the garbage, too and be prepared to pay $800 for another bottle once inside the airport. (Yes, Virginia, there are people who taken advantage of bad situations.)

Next, be prepared to go through metal detectors, but before you do you will have to take off your shoes and all your jewelry. Gals, let me tell you here…an underwire bra will set off the detector…but, the “girls” have to have what the “girls” have to have…I hear x-ray searches are coming soon…groovy…

Then, you schlep to the gate where you sit in tiny stadium style seats, listen to insane conversation, hyper kids, irritable travelers and finally you hear your magic number called and you queue up for the pleasure of being crammed into flying tin cans that are usually overbooked and packed like a cattle car. You are “served” by surly attendants who have turned into bullies who just dare passengers to look at them wrong so they can use a federal law to throw them off the plane because they are “dangerous”…

I think they call this a volatile situation and I recommend sedation for the flight…

Oh, and there is also no more having loved ones escort or meet you at the gate for a final goodbye or hello…they might slip you some type of contraband…like a 6 ounce bottle of Lubriderm…

So, you may be asking, “What in the name of God happened to cause the change?”

Well, I can tell you this, it wasn’t because some little old lady that looked like Granny Clampett got on an airplane and hijacked it and caused the plane to plummet into the Kansas Cattle Stockyard. NO!

We suffer through these changes in our way of life because 19 Islamic terrorists (a word the current administration is challenged to use, even now) began planning mayhem on the USA in 2000 and brought it to fruition on September 11, 2001.

Now, let me ask you something else. Do you really remember 9/11? The fear, the terror, the sadness, the emptiness, the darkness, the anger? Or has your memory been dulled by the day to day fight to survive? Do you remember all the faces of 9/11? The Islamic terrorists bent on destroying the Great Satan (us)? The First Responders? The Victims? The heroes like United Airline 93?

There was another incident that lent changes to air travel. The infamous British “shoe bomber” Richard Reid. Reid was the British born son of Jamaican Colvin Reid who was of African descent and British born Leslie Hughes. Reid’s father was a career criminal and Richard himself began a career in crime at a young age. He was advised by his father to convert to Islam because they got better food in prison. Umm, great reason for a conversion…pretty self-serving…no thought of the ol’ afterlife there or doing better for mankind, but then bombing innocent people doesn’t do others too much good either… Next time Richard was sent to prison for his crimes, he converted to Islam and he became known as either Abdul Raheem or Tariq Raja.

Upon his release from prison, Richard joined the Brixton Mosque which was lead by Abu Hamzu al-Masri who was a rabid anti-American cleric. Before long Richard had Al Qaeda ties and was training in terrorist camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan. (Are you beginning to see a pattern here? On a side note, why are American companies outsourcing American jobs to these countries where the people hate us? Especially when we need jobs so badly here in this country?)

Finally in December 2001 Reid boarded a plane in Paris that was bound for Miami, FL. He was wearing shoes that were loaded with plastic explosives. I think the intent was clear…he intended to blow up the plane and every living soul with it.

And, thus my friends that is why we take our shoes off now when we want to go see grandma, go to a family funeral or travel to a cancer treatment out of state or even to a business meeting…

Because of an Islamic terrorist

Now, in my world 2 + 2 = 4. But, in this strange new world there is strange new “math” at work…

For instance…did you know there are children as young as 4 on the TSA “no fly list”? Or 8 year olds? There was one particular poor kid who was given a “pat down” when he was as young as 2 years old! Recently I saw on a couple of news shows a 12 year old who is in the same boat. Of course the TSA denies this…but so did OJ and Scott Peterson…

Now, here’s where I’m having some issues…how the heck in this day in age does someone like Faisal Shahzad, an apparent US hating, Pakistan born Muslim become a US citizen (just last year) get a gun permit, plastic explosives and large amounts of fertilizer (albeit the wrong kind…guess he misses his ride on the Martyr Rocket for bumbling) make a car bomb (fortunately ineptly), place that bomb in Time Square and board a plane to Dubai, make it onto the runway (and contrary to what’s being portrayed, Shahzad was a hair away from being a free bird) and do all this without being on the radar?!

Meanwhile, Granny Clampett and 2 year old kids are patted down at the gate and put on the TSA “no fly” list and Joe the Plumber jumps through hoops of fire to fly to Disney World…just watch, the powers to be will use this to “amend” our Second Amendment Rights…also known as our right to bear arms when all the “powers” have to do is their job to keep the bad guys from doing their job…

Meanwhile, New York Mayor Mike BloomingIdiot Bloomberg, sage that he is, bet 25 cents the bomber probably was some duffus that was upset and went off the reservation because of Obama’s healthcare plan. No profiling there, huh, Mike? While he’s scraping egg off his face, I was wondering, “Where in the world is Rudy”?

All this just keeps me wondering, “What’s up with this…?” 2 + 2 is not adding up to 4 with these people… Makes me think mortgages and the economy aren’t the only things upside down and underwater…and don’t even get me started about the Crotch Bomber…

I left a comment on John’s blog concerning this issue. You see, this takes away individual responsibility and opens the door for the government to rule every aspect of your life. That’s just what we need in this country now…less individual responsibility…NOT!

At first glance I’m sure there will be many who will say, “Dude, this is a great idea!” A lot are the same people that march in “protest marches” against “the Man”, “Big Brother” and “the evil Empire” known as the US government. So, now they want to let “the Man” manage your table and diet.

A wise man said, “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:8

This particular issues steams me on a personal level. You see for years I was extremely thin…anorexic actually. I counted every calorie that went into my body and walked at the track and rode my exercise bike as much as 30 miles a day, but never less than 5 miles. I was obsessed.

But, then life…Mother Nature or fate intervened. At the age of 28 I had my first episode of NON-smoking lung cancer…in my right lung. Thirteen years later, a second episode struck my body, this time in my left lung. I had absolutely none of the risk factors for cancer in general and lung cancer in particular. No, none! I had never lived with a smoker, picked up a cigarette…blah, blah, blah… You tell me why…doctors are stumped…unless…

Unless the cancer is related to the several autoimmune disorders that decided to attack my body at a fairly young age. These illness attack internal organs…

The next thing that started happening was rounds and rounds of different types of medications prescribed by the very supposedly health conscience doctors attending my illnesses. There’s one thing they don’t tell you about these medications…many of them have hidden side effects…one in particular…weight gain.

Oh yeah, it happens. So, even though I have always tried to maintain a healthy diet and stay as active as my disease ridden body will allow, I gained weight on these meds. I’m not the only one this has happened too. Who can forget the shock the world expressed when they saw comedian Jerry Lewis in 2002 after he revealed poor health and the side effects the medications caused on his body. At least a 45 pound weight gain…

So, I say, “fat tax”? No way!! How about taking that discrimination and putting it where the sun doesn’t shine?

Indoctrination, by Beverly Hicks Burch

For those of you that don’t read Uncommon Sensibilities

Folks, if you don’t believe this video is indoctrination…then read the quotes from history from below and give it a second thought…

With youth I can create a new world

“I begin with the young. We older ones are used up. But my magnificent youngsters! Look at these men and boys! What material! With them, I can create a new world”

Adolf Hitler – Nuremberg 1933

By the time Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, 3.5 million children were members of the Hitler Youth.

“We must create out of the younger generation a generation of Communists. We must turn children, who can be shaped like wax, into real, good Communists…. We must remove the children from the crude influence of their families. We must take them over and, to speak frankly, nationalize them. From the first days of their lives they will be under the healthy influence of Communist children’s nurseries and schools. There they will grow up to be real Communists.”

Communist Party Education Workers Congress – 1918

Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.

A Sick System at Uncommon Sensibilities, by Beverly Hicks Burch

Today over at Uncommon Sensibilities I’ve posted a blog about the new President of the Canadian Medical Association and her opinion of the “sick” Canadian healthcare system…the one Obama wants us to imitate. I also discuss some personal applications of the “end of life counseling” of his reform.
